An air conditioning unit (correctly called an air-to-air heat pump) heats and cools individual rooms. An air source heat pump (air-to-water) replaces your boiler and heats your whole home through your radiators or underfloor heating, plus your hot water. They both move heat using the same core technology — a compressor and refrigerant — but they solve different problems.
Air conditioning: room by room comfort
What most people mean by "air conditioning" is a wall-mounted indoor unit connected to an outdoor unit, cooling and heating one or two specific rooms. Bedrooms, living rooms, home offices, conservatories — anywhere that gets uncomfortably hot in summer or you want quick, efficient extra heat in winter.
It sits alongside your existing boiler and central heating. It doesn't replace anything. You get a genuinely useful bit of cooling for the two or three weeks a year York gets properly hot, and a very efficient top-up heater for the rest of the year.
Air source heat pumps: whole-house replacement
An air-to-water heat pump is a much bigger job. It replaces your gas boiler entirely, connects into your existing (or upgraded) radiator system, and heats your hot water cylinder. It's a genuine alternative heating system for the whole property, not an add-on.
That means a bigger install, bigger outdoor unit, usually larger radiators or underfloor heating to work efficiently at lower flow temperatures, and a much bigger price tag — typically £8,000–£14,000+ after any available grants, compared with an estimate from £1,800 upwards for a single-room air conditioning unit.
So which one do you need?
Ask yourself what problem you're actually trying to solve:
- "My bedroom is unbearable in summer" / "I want to cool my home office" — that's air conditioning. Quick, relatively affordable, fitted in a day.
- "I want to replace my gas boiler with something greener" — that's an air source heat pump. A bigger project, bigger investment, whole-house change.
Most of our air conditioning customers aren't trying to get off gas — they're solving a specific comfort problem in a specific room, usually a bedroom that never cools down, a conservatory that's unusable in summer, or a home office that gets too hot to work in.
The bit that surprises people
Both are zero VAT on domestic installs under current HMRC rules (Notice 708/6, running to 31 March 2027) — so whichever route makes sense for you, you're not paying the extra 20%.

Yes — some homes use an air-to-water heat pump for whole-house heating and hot water, plus a dedicated air-to-air unit in a room that needs extra summer cooling, like a south-facing conservatory or loft conversion.
Is air conditioning worth it if I rarely need cooling?
Most customers actually use it more for efficient winter heating in one room (a home office, for example) than for the handful of hot days each summer.
