Boiler Advice for York Homeowners

We've covered York for 18 years — first as Acomb Plumbing & Heating, now as The Boiler Doctor — so whichever part of the city you're in, chances are we've already worked a few streets away. This page brings together what York homeowners ask us most: what things cost, how to check you're getting a proper Gas Safe engineer, and what to do the moment the heating goes off.

How much does a new boiler cost in York?

A like-for-like combi swap starts from £2,000; a system-to-combi conversion (where more pipework work is involved) starts from £3,000. Most York jobs fall between £2,000 and £3,000, depending on the boiler and the property. We always give you a free, written quote before anything's agreed — no pressure to buy bigger than you need.

See our New Boiler Installation in York page for pricing, or read our full cost breakdown and combi vs system guide if you're not sure which boiler type suits your home.

Finding a Gas Safe engineer in York

Whoever you use, check their Gas Safe registration number on the official register first — it's a legal requirement, and it takes thirty seconds. We're registered under 570248, and Worcester Bosch and Ideal accredited, which matters for keeping your manufacturer's warranty valid. A good number of the calls that come in start with someone who's been let down by a previous engineer, sometimes more than once — it's one of the most common things we hear, and it's an easy one to fix.

Boiler breakdowns — what to do first

No heating or hot water is our most common call across the whole of York, and it's usually a pressure, valve, or PCB issue that gets sorted in one visit. Start by checking the pressure gauge — anything under 1 bar points to a leak or a recent radiator bleed. If there's an error code showing, tell us what it says when you ring; it often tells us most of what we need before we've even set off.

A good number of our emergency calls aren't even for the person ringing — it's someone checking on an elderly relative, or a new parent who doesn't want the house going cold overnight. Tell us if that's the situation and we'll treat it as the priority it is.

Our Boiler Repairs & Breakdowns in York page has our current call-out pricing, and our pressure troubleshooting guide covers what's safe to check yourself before you call.

Don't wait for it to break — get it serviced

An annual service is £100 + VAT and it's the simplest way to avoid an emergency callout — it also protects your manufacturer's warranty, which most homeowners only discover has lapsed when it's too late. If you're a landlord anywhere in York, this is also where your CP12 gas safety certificate comes from; see our Gas Safety & Landlords page for the full legal requirement.

If you'd rather not think about it every year, our Boiler Care Plans start from £12.99/month and include your annual service, and a free CO alarm.
