Combi vs System Boiler — Which Do I Need?
This is one of the first questions we get asked on almost every new boiler enquiry. There's no single right answer — it depends on your home, not just what's cheapest or newest. Here's how we actually think about it.
Combi boilers
A combi (combination) boiler heats water directly from the mains, on demand — no hot water cylinder, no cold water tank in the loft. Good for:
- Smaller to medium homes with one or two bathrooms
- Flats or homes with limited loft/airing cupboard space
- Households that don't run multiple hot taps or showers at exactly the same time
The trade-off: if two showers run at once, pressure and temperature can dip, since it's all coming from one unit in real time.
System boilers
A system boiler heats water and stores it in a hot water cylinder, but most of the components are built into the boiler itself (unlike an older-style regular boiler, which needs a separate feed tank too). Good for:
- Larger homes with multiple bathrooms
- Households that want strong, consistent pressure even with more than one tap running
- Homes with solar thermal or planning to add it later
The trade-off: you need space for a cylinder, and once the stored hot water runs out, you wait for it to reheat.
So which one do you need?
