Boiler Breakdown and an Elderly Relative Living Alone? Here's What We Do Differently
If you're calling us about your mum or dad's boiler rather than your own, you're not the exception — it's one of the most common calls we get. An adult son or daughter, ringing on behalf of a parent who's on their own and can't face dealing with a boiler breakdown, or simply doesn't want the hassle of it themselves. Here's what changes when that's the situation.
We know it's a different kind of stressful
When it's your own boiler, it's inconvenient. When it's your elderly mum or dad's, and you're not there, it's genuinely worrying — especially in winter, when a cold house isn't just uncomfortable, it's a real health risk for someone older. We take that seriously, and we treat these calls with a bit more urgency, not less.
What we do differently
- We're patient, on the phone and on the doorstep. No jargon, no rushing — if your parent is the one answering the door, we explain what we're doing and why in plain English, the same as we would to you.
- We'll happily deal with you, not just them. If you want to be the point of contact — arranging access, being told what we've found, sorting payment — just say so when you call. We're used to it.
- We work around them, not the other way round. If your parent has a routine, mobility issues, or just doesn't love having a stranger in the house, tell us in advance. It genuinely helps us turn up prepared rather than catching anyone off guard.
- Same team, every time. It's Steve or Kyle who come out — not a rotating cast of subcontractors your parent has never met before.
What helps us before we even arrive
- Let us know if there's a key safe, a neighbour with a spare key, or anything else about getting in if your parent struggles to answer the door quickly.
- If you know the make of the boiler, or roughly how old it is, that helps us come prepared with the right parts more often than not.
- Give your parent a heads-up that we're coming, and roughly when — a stranger turning up unannounced is unsettling for anyone, more so if they're on their own.
- Leave us your own number as well as theirs, so we can update you directly if that's easier for everyone.
If it's genuinely urgent
No hot water is uncomfortable for most people. No heating at all, for someone older, especially in winter, can become a real safety issue faster than you'd think. If your parent has no heating and it's cold, don't wait it out — treat it as the emergency boiler repair it genuinely is and call us straight away. We prioritise these, and where we can, it's same day boiler repair.
Call us on 01904 206190 or WhatsApp 07414 291034 — tell us it's for a relative and what's going on, and we'll take it from there.
