Boiler not working, no heating, no hot water — whatever's brought you here, most people don't stop to work out which trade actually handles a boiler breakdown before they start ringing round. You just want someone who can sort it, and fast. So here's the straight answer, no messing about, plus what to actually expect once you've made the call.
A boiler is a job for a heating engineer, not "a plumber"
Plumbers and heating engineers overlap, but they're not the same thing. A plumber deals with pipework, taps, drains and general water systems. A boiler is a gas appliance — so fixing one, safely and legally, means you need someone who's specifically trained and registered to work on gas appliances, not just pipes.
That's the bit a lot of people don't realise until they've already had someone round who couldn't actually touch the boiler itself.
Why "Gas Safe registered" isn't just a nice-to-have
In the UK, it's the law: only a Gas Safe registered engineer can legally work on a gas boiler. It's not a badge companies put on their van for show — every registered engineer has their own licence number, and you can check it yourself on the Gas Safe Register before you let anyone near your boiler.
